Toe-to-toe, back-to-back, let’s go!

I encourage everyone to pick a secret partner-in-crime. Someone you look up to that you think would totally support you in your endeavors, whether they be business-like, in the creative field, or just in life in general. Especially as you consider breaking out of your mold and doing new things.

Think of inspiring people like Oprah or Mother Theresa, etc.

Mine is Kathleen Hanna. The riot grrrl from Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, and the Julie Ruin. (I love her.)

I typically think, would Kathleen Hanna let this get to her?

Let’s back up a little bit. This past NYE, I planned a sober party for my community. I raised money for it, advertised it, sought the best safest alcohol-free location, bought decorations, and obsessed on it for about two months.

A very prominent figure in my AA community basically shut the whole thing down by saying she didn’t endorse it and that anyone that went to my party was not really serious about their recovery/sobriety.

What.
the.
fuck.

I was basically just sitting there totally shocked. I think I laughed because she said hookahs get you high (the venue was at a cool hookah lounge).

I reached out to some people that have been supporting my event but that know this prominent lady very well, and they all basically told me the same thing: You’re doing something new, something different, you’re going to get some bullshit.

And so, I did.

The event was fun regardless, but I was astonished at the lack of female support that I got. Could it all be the Prominent Lady’s fault? Could it be my fault? Maybe a little of both. Regardless, I did it and it was fun.

But the whole point, I was channeling my inner Kathleen throughout the experience.

Would Kathleen shut the whole thing down at this point?
Would she badmouth the lady that criticized her?
Would she be scared and run under the covers and never come out again?

No
No
No!

So pick your secret partner-in-crime and tell me who it is in the comments!
